Face to Face with New Media Art From Finland

F2F New Media Art from Finland exhibition takes us to the unexplored worlds of contemporary art. It combines traditional elements of art with the latest solutions of new technologies evoking innovative interaction between the artwork and the audience. Within F2F the audience becomes a significant part of the artwork.

F2F exhibition at the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts in Montreal presents installations by seven media artists from Finland: Battle over Indifferent Minds by Hanna Haaslahti, mirror++ by Juha Huuskonen, SOB by Marita Liulia, Aquarium by Teijo Pellinen, hit2Morrow by Kristian Simolin, need by Tuomo Tammenpää, and Mother, Child by Heidi Tikka.

During its two-year tour, F2F has provided a platform for an international dialogue across the continents, from Helsinki, Finland to major cultural cities in North America, from Los Angeles, Washington DC and Toronto to Montreal. In the future the exhibition will travel to New York, and possibly even further to yet another continent.

While the tour continues in North America, the artists are actively involved in new projects: Juha has been busy developing further applications based on the technology of mirror++. Heidi has expanded the Mother, Child to a trilogy. Kristian and Marita have taken a more playful attitude. They have created new virtual toys for the Internet and a Tarot game for mobile telephones. Teijo has concentrated on developing streaming video technologies via the www, whereas Hanna Dances Through the Force of Gravity with her video installation currently on view in Belgium. Tuomo has gained international recognition with need from Belgium to Beijing.

The visual image of the exhibition is by Finnish designer Ilkka Suppanen, the Design Director of Snowcrash Design Group. Marko Tandefelt, Professor of Physical Computing at Parsons School of Design, is the curator of the F2F show.

The F2F exhibition and tour have been produced and organized by the Finnish Foundation for the Visual Arts in partnership with the Embassy of Finland in Washington DC. The Canadian tour has been realized in collaboration with the Embassy of Finland in Ottawa.
